This case study explores fitness apps through a product lens, focusing on user pain points that affect long-term engagement. The goal was to uncover why users drop off, what motivates them to stay consistent, and how thoughtful design can support habit-building and personal fitness goals.

I began by researching various fitness products in the market, narrowing my focus to mobile fitness apps that support users in achieving workout goals.

One key challenge stood out: user retention. Many users download fitness apps but stop using them over time. This insight led me to conduct a competitive benchmarking of popular apps to understand what works and what doesn’t.

To dig deeper, I used the "How Might We" (HMW) framework to reframe user pain points into opportunity areas:

  • How might we help make users feel confident and comfortable when they try out the app as a new user?

  • How might we keep the user motivated to exercise?

  • How might we make the user feel confident about choosing the right work out plan for them?

  • How might we make the user understand the benefits of the right food choices?

  • How might we help the users to engage with one another and make exercise more collaborative?

  • How might we help users stay motivated during their journey?

  • How might we encourage the users for going to the next level of their current workout plan?

These HMW questions shaped the direction of the solution and informed both the user personas and a detailed feature list.

With a clearer understanding of the user needs, I created a basic information architecture to define the app’s primary navigation and flow.

This was followed by high-fidelity wireframes that brought structure and clarity to the user experience.

Finally, I translated everything into polished UI screens to visualize how the experience would come to life.
